The winner's drape

The drape, known by everyone as the “palio”, is the coveted prize for the winner of the race. It must bear the effigy of the patron saint of Asti, Saint Secundus, the “Anno Domini”, the emblems and the motto of the city and the signature of the Master of the Palio, i.e. the artist who, as per specific assignment by the Municipality, creates it.

A second drape is offered in homage to the church of Saint Secundus during the patronal feasts. There are five other prizes: A bag of silver coins for the runner-up; silver spurs as third price, a live rooster as fourth price; the rosette with the colors of Asti as fifth price and, finally, as last price, as a sign of mockery, an anchovy with salad.
