The largest restaurant in italy
The Festival delle Sagre (Festival of Festivals) is a unique event in Italy. The feast takes place on Sunday, with a gastronomic advance specifically intended for young people on the previous Saturday evening.
In Piazza Campo del Palio, a real village is set up (with brick houses, the church, the Town Hall and even the Post Office) and is transformed into a gigantic open-air restaurant, where from 7 PM on Saturday each of the over forty participating Pro Loco associations offers a typical dish accompanied by a dessert and a glass of D.O.C. or D.O.C.G. wine in their stand, offering a complete panorama of the great food and wine tradition of the city and its territory.
It is the right occasion to try the Piedmont mixed fried food, the boiled meat, bagna cauda, agnolotti del “plin”, the chocolate bonèt… Appetizers, first courses, second courses and desserts: All the dishes of the Asti and Piedmont tradition that you have always wanted to taste, at your fork, in a great event dedicated to good taste.
The parade
On Sunday morning, the streets of the historic center of Asti come alive with a great parade, arriving in Piazza Campo del Palio, the forty Pro Loco associations of Asti stage glimpses of the life of the peasant world, showing over 3000 figures in period clothing, enhancing the rural past of the area and displaying authentic clothes, tools and machinery from the pre-industrial era, in a sort of museum of the self-propelled rural world.
The figures cross the city recalling the moments of peasant life in a surprising, lively and accurate representation, which follows the seasons of the year.
The trophy
Every year, in the days following the event, since 1978, a special commission assigns a series of prizes to the Pro Loco associations, including the Giovanni Borello Super-trophy, based on five parameters:
- The parade
- The stand
- The food
- The service
- The quantity and quality of the products
Since 2001, the local Chamber of Commerce has also hosted two “out-of-town” pro loco associations (one regional and one national) in the event.
Typical local dishes
“Baciuà”, “Puccia”, “Soma d’aj”, “Fundent”, “Cisrà”, “Friciö” – Do you know these dishes?
