One of the most beautiful stately palaces of the eighteenth century in Asti
Seat of the Civic Museum since 1940
Palazzo Mazzetti
Palazzo Mazzetti is a prestigious historical building in Asti, testimony of the social affirmation of a family of noble origins enriched with the activity of the Mint and with careful real estate purchases. From the last quarter of the seventeenth century, Count Giovanni Battista began the work of merging the medieval buildings of the block of Corso Alfieri and the construction of new buildings.
In the years 1751-1752, architect Benedetto Alfieri designed the construction of the eastern wing and the reconstruction of the facade. An undisputed residence of prestige, the palace hosted personalities such as James Stuart (1717), the King of Sardinia Carlo Emanuele III (1727) and Napoleon I (1805) over the centuries.
Museo Civico e Pinacoteca (Civic Museum and Art Gallery)
In the rooms on the main floor, characterized by refined Baroque decoration, ancient and modern paintings are exhibited, as well as furnishings and important collections from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Here you can find the collection of ivory, lacquered wood and porcelain artefacts collected by the rear admiral of the Royal Navy, Enrico Secondo Guglielminetti, and Giuseppe Rolando during their travels in the East. You can also admire the precious micro-sculptures of the famous Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo (Asti, 1745 - Turin, 1820) and the ancient fabrics and clothes of the Gerbo collection.
On the second floor, the nineteenth and twentieth century painting and sculpture collections document the figurative history of Asti, of which the the rich collection of works by Michelangelo Pittatore is the perfect example.
