The Fiera Carolingia (Carolingian Fair)
The Fiera Carolingia (Carolingian Fair) is one of the largest, oldest, and most important in Piedmont. During this event, all the streets and squares of the center are invaded by over six hundred stalls with all kinds of goods.
The commercial tradition of the city of Asti is very old. The provisions relating to the establishment of trade fairs and how to participate are already present in the Codice Catenato (Catenate Code), dating of the late 14th century. In fact, the Code states: "As has been resolved and established, two fairs are held every year in the city of Asti: The first one begins eight days before the Feast of Saint Secundus and ends eight days after that holiday; it takes place from the Gardini house down [at the current Piazza Roma, in the lower part of the city - Editor's note]; the second one takes place from 1 to 16 November and the venue is fixed from the house of the Gardini upwards."
It was then sanctioned that the Podestà and his officials did their best to ensure that the events took place in complete tranquility, both for merchants and visitors, with a precise guarantee of safety extended to the goods as well.
Furthermore, "The Podestà, fifteen days before the start of each fair, must send invitations to participate in all cities and towns, ensuring that the inhabitants of these places are guaranteed maximum freedom of movement and safety during their stay in the city."
Organizing Body: Municipality of Asti in collaboration with CONSORZIO EUROFIVA 2000.
